Re-Creating the Senior Trip
Raiders in Italy, May 2001 (we hope!)
Mary Bradley-McCauley '55, our indefatigable travel agent, has announced preliminary plans for a re-creation of our Senior Trip, in May 2001. Mary emphasizes that
everything in this itinerary is tentative!
Day 1 - Fly to Rome
Day 2 - Overnight in Rome
Day 3 - Sightseeing Rome in the AM with some free time before we motorcoach to the Tuscan Hills, where we will spend 6 nights at a spa resort in Montecatini, taking day trips into the Tuscan area. (Click on the city names in the large map on this Web site.)
Day 4 - Excursion to Siena and San Gimignano checking out Volterra along the way. There will be a guided tour in Siena then we go back through the Chianti Hills with their
Rufina wine country to Montecatini. Siena's mad bareback Palio horse race, says a nearly defunct Web site with a great aerial view of the town square, was won in 1999 by the Contrada of the Snail - fast breaking sports news, Italian Web style.
Day 5 - Full day to do our own thing - take our own tours in the area or just relax at the spa.
Day 6 - Motorcoach to Florence - a walking tour with a local guide - then on our own to check out the many museums, galleries and gardens. Time for shopping then return to Montecatini via the Arno Valley.
Day 7 - Off to Pisa, tour the city then on to the Italian Riviera via Torre del Lago Puccini where the composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) wrote some of his famous works. Then to the resort of Viareggio with time to enjoy the beaches or just stoll the promenade. Back to Montecatini later in the afternoon.
Day 8 - A day of leisure where we can visit the marble quarries or take an excursion back to Florence to see some of the sites missed earlier.
Day 9 - We take the autostrada to Assisi, city of St. Francis, where we'll visit the Basilica with its Giotto frescoes, then on into Rome -we spend the night and
Day 10 - Fly home
The trip includes 8 buffet breakfasts, 6 three course dinners. In Rome we stay (probably)at the Sheraton, and the 6 nights in Montecatini we'll (probably) stay at the Grand Bellavista Palace and Golf.
Tour cost with air from NY (or Newark) this year is $1605 in May, rising to $1865 in June. We probably won't be able to set a date for the trip until September 2000. Do we want to add a trip to Kaiserslautern also?

Here's where we're going - I'm beginning to post Web sites, mostly in atrocious English.
