| SMSA is an organization of folks who tell stories for a living,
who tell stories for the love of it, who write stories to be told out loud, or who just love to hear a good yarn.
Our goals are to promote the art of storytelling in central East Tennessee, raise public awareness of storytellers as
professional artists, and to help local storytellers to improve their skills. We belong to the
National Storytelling Network (NSN) and to the
Tennessee Storytelling Association. Some of us are school teachers or librarians, experienced in working with small children. But we vigorously affirm that stories are for adults too: entertaining, instructive, and healing as well as downright fun! Some of us tell old time Appalachian stories, Jack tales and other styles; some call on a different heritage: Jewish, Native American, Irish. Most of us are eclectic, with stories from a variety of sources and for a variety of occasions. Profiles and contact information for many of the Smoky Mountain Storytellers are accessible from the list of members. We also hold storytelling workshops, support storytelling groups in area schools, and sponsor several storytelling events throughout the year.
